On Friday the 13th this month, I finally submitted all my paperwork for my Permanent Resident Visa. I always get nervous going to the visa office; even to the brand new one all shiny and fresh at Cosmo Square.

I put on my favourite blue vintage dress beautiful, shawl, gloves, pearls and lipstick and set off.

So many people had warned me about the "new proposed guidelines" for visa renewal (something that I wrote about in September on this blog), demanding that we hold Japanese National Health Insurance to proceed in the visa process.

I ignored all people trying to scare me, and take away the glory and satisfaction I felt in the whole concept of getting a new visa status golden. Of course when I got to the office, nothing was ever mentioned. The whole experience was rather calm, friendly and coming-of-age-like.

An e-mail from a friend yesterday confirmed some good news about the "proposed" visa changes. Foreigners living in Japan can choose the health coverage they desire without fearing it will negatively influence their visa renewal. Hurrah for that!

I am such a stationery girl.

Japan is such a dreamland for gorgeous paper, pens, diaries, stickers, stamps, and notebooks. It is so easy and cheap to be creative and colourful in communications of ritual and celebration. I was heading to the sixth floor of Shinsaibashi LOFT last Wednesday to be dazzled by the heavenly stationery floor there, and begin my preparation for Christmas and New Year card making.

All the J-girls in the elevator with me had the same thing on their minds. Sixth floor direct. No stops. I commented about this to one of the girls, and got a mini smile. Looking across to the closed elevator doors, I noticed the poster for Club Quattro.

And I noticed a name of memory.

Shonen Knife.

They are one of those bands that I had always wanted to see in Japan somehow, but never did. With a show next month, we all have the chance to see a little bit of their magic.

The Assistant Director is responsible for aiding the Director of CHIC in all aspects of operations, including program, events, fundraising development and implementation, financial, volunteer staffing and office management.

The ideal candidate for this position will have excellent communication and interpersonal skills. The OAK Clinic in Namba is a very ordered and precise place, and you can usually get in and out in about 60 minutes.

After you register, just sit and relax on the wall long sofa, wait for your number to be called, and enter the room specified. There is a constant flow of ladies going in and out of different doors like musical chairs, so wear comfortable clothes, and take as little as possible.

The many doors are labeled in English and Japanese.

Consultation Room.

Examination Rooms A and B.

It is full of all sorts of women, which makes it an interesting people watching place, although like the bath house, there isn't much eye contact, and pretty much no chit chat between the patients.

Go as early as you can before opening hours to speed up the order of your consultation. Boys are not allowed past the waiting room either FYI.

There are two English speaking female doctors on staff to make (a little) of the anguish of gynecological consultations smoother.

Take your health care card, and something to read.

Oak Clinic is easy to find on the 8th floor of Namba Parks Tower, so if you aren't a doctor kinda person, there is plenty of fun and distraction to be had after your consultation as a reward.

MONOPOLY madness

I laughed when I spotted this Osaka version of Monopoly in a Namba souvenir shop. It felt like the Osaka spirit standing tall with absolute pride.

Just the other evening, I was giggling with some deep Osaka friends retired, who I was sharing a beer with after school at a lovely old pub in Mino. They kept joking around about 'that's an Osaka thing', or 'that word originates in Osaka', or 'that only happens in Osaka, not Kyoto'. They were so open in their absolute certainty that Osaka was the place to be. That Osaka had the pulse of everything real. That having been born in Osaka made them extra special somehow. It was so sweet to witness.

I always do that when I talk about Australia. I know I do it for Osaka too.

I usually walk past here when I need a burst of colour injection. The grey, black, khaki, beige, and navy blue fashion choices that greet me on the train daily at the beginning of Autumn, are so very dull for my taste. Even my students aren't that radical in any form of rebellious 80's fluoro, hippie tie-dye, or ethnic blend rainbowy. They play it safe with 'natural casual' hues from Muji.

I am usually wearing my red or pink Kangol Huntington, striking knee-high socks from Tutu Anna, my adored green retro trench coat, or a brightly shining vintage dress. Colour feeds my imagination and inner powers; especially on those cloudy days of empty sky nothingness.

United Church of Christ in Japan Osaka CHURCH

I was just out and about on my bicycle recently, and went left instead of right. I found this beautiful old church, and an Indian restaurant up the road I didn't know about. Something about living on the wild side. The gardens are glorious, and the old brick is mysterious. If you are in the area, why not pop in and see what glories lay inside. You don't have to be Christian to enjoy such beauty.

A short walk to both The National Museum of Art, and Utsubo Park, there are also plenty of restaurants and mini art galleries along Kyobori-dori.

Dance of the Uterus workshop

(10 hours of practice)

A unique workshop for women only, where you will discover a series of dynamic exercises practiced with music, designed to restore and maintain women's genital health. This workshop is meant for all women, whatever their age and gynecological condition.

By contracting and relaxing the uterus and the muscles of the lower pelvic area, we increase　oxygenation and blood flow. These simple and powerful exercises allow regeneration of female organs, promote better inner consciousness and help maintain or restore hormonal balance.

Dance of the Uterus offers multiple benefits in all problems related to the female cycle:menstrual pain, irregular cycles, absence of periods, premenstrual syndrome. Practicing the exercises induces greater emotional stability and a fulfilling sexuality. The method can be used as a natural means of birth-control; it stimulates fertility and libido, helps reduce cysts, fibroids and endometriosis, and allows a harmonious transition into menopause.

The exercises are also very good for women who do not have their uterus anymore, or who suffer from fallen organs (prolapse). But most of all, Dance of the Uterus is excellent for maintaining and enhancing our genital health.

PROFILE:
Mona Hebert is a homeopath, naturopath and herbalist. She has her own clinic in Montreal (Quebec, Canada), where in fifteen years of practice she has seen several thousand women.

She also gives many workshops for women in North America, in Europe (France and Belgium) and now Japan. In her book “La medecine des femmes” (“Women's Medicine”, published in French by Editions du Roseau), she shares her rich experience of natural health care for women; she invites us to read the genital language, to perceive its encoded messages and to discover a type of health care that we can become familiar with, understand and integrate.

At the end of the workshop, you will be able to do the exercises on your own. To help in your personal practice, you will receive an illustrated booklet.

What to bring : comfortable clothes (like for doing yoga), water, pencil. During the exercises, it can become hot, so we recommend layered clothing, that you can remove and put on again according to your body's temperature.

PINK ribbon SPLENDOR

If you can somehow draw your attention away from that extra beautiful Harvest Moon out there in our Osaka skies, you might be a little delighted to see a new addition to the Umeda Sky Building; a stunning pink ribbon of lights! It looks just great all pinky and shiny, although it could be bigger I think!

I remember being happily surprised the other day when Yahoo! Japan was all pink in hue, to support the education of breast cancer awareness. Some body cream I brought back from Australia on my last trip were also all pink in prettiness, with a proportion of the sales going toward breast cancer research. Fabulous. Just fabulous this out loud reminder for women's (and men's) health in bold. Go take a 'peek at the pink' if you are in the area; I'm not sure how long it will be there.

The last time I had such fun with favourite buildings in flashy bling, was when the Sydney Harbour Bridge was all lit up a few years back. An old school friend was getting married in the Sydney Opera House on the day before I was due to fly back to Osaka in the early hours of the next morning. Although I couldn't party hard all night, the bridge all lit up in mystery gave me quite a buzz, and made a perfect backdrop for photos original.

Osaka landscapes change so constantly. Stay aware of your surroundings if you can. The new Mitsukoshi Isetan Department Store being built in Umeda, has already blocked the view of the Sky Building from the top of the Canon Gallery (see the post "MAKE a day of it with your CAMERA"). The symbolic ABC Tower on Naniwa-suji street in Fukushima is slowly, slowly growing shorter and shorter and shorter from the bottom down. Change is everywhere. Keep your eyes open to the wonder.

IKEBANA exhibition

I seem to be the only one interested in the arty-type tickets lying about at my schools. It is certainly the first thing I check when I walk in with my JJ-sensei mode switched on each day. The tickets I found this week are to the 43rd Ikebana Exhibition at Daimaru in Shinsaibashi.

I clearly remember the first time I ever went with my free ticket in hand, thinking I had nothing to lose. WELL! These exhibitions are rather spectacular, and I look forward to them tremendously. The art is alive, the artists are usually there, and everybody is super friendly and genkied-up.

I have FIVE sets of pair tickets if anybody would like to go and experience this for themselves. Daimaru is right downtown, so perfect for after work drop-ins, or for a burst of creativity before lunch or dinner.

LOOKING in from KYOTO

Forever Friend and long time Kyoto resident Gary, comes and visits me in Osaka now and again if I let him. Until recently, I have always somehow managed to convince him I "need" some Kyoto time, and off I go on my favourite Keihan Line to meet him for a full day of Kyoto soaking. Lately we have been doing some walking and talking, marveling and mingling into Osaka ways - of together.

I absolutely adore the moods I feel in Kyoto each time I go, and the ultra magnetism of the Kamo River in neutralizing unwanted self-concepts. For Kyoto residents visiting Osaka, different angles of allure and delight are simply wow-ful and wild.

Gary tells me,

SOBA splendid on a SUNDAY

I love the simplicity of 'udon' for lunch. Cheap, quick, delish and fun. I went to Takamatsu city in Kagawa-ken again last month to feast on udon for three meals a day, and visit my favourite Ritsurin Park; probably again by slow ferry for the long weekend in October. Noodles are Nice aren't they.

Instead of my usual 300 yen-ish bowl of udon goodness, today I visited 'Karani' for some atmospheric hand made 'soba' on my last day of school holidays before Semester 2 begins tomorrow proper. Located in the softly humming 'shoutengai' just 500 metres down from JR Fukushima station, Karani is a lovely Sunday lunch location. The place is fresh, feel-good and modernly old. Soba dishes range from 800 – 1300 yen, with a large selection of 'tsumami' (snacks) to begin your journey with some Heartland beer perhaps.

The man behind this shop, Kiyoshi san, is a surfer boy true. Mini splurges of surf photos and surf magazines here and there, add to the colour and charm of this corner place comfortable. His surfy tan, and radiantly shiny laughter lend the interior landscape some buzz and beauty.

The soba is just divine, and looks so very pretty; eat slowly and enjoy the different textures. There are thick and thin soba combinations, which to me look exquisitely feminine and masculine. After your meal, add some of the thick white 'sobayu' (in the jug) to your soba dipping sauce, and try drinking it. A distinctly refreshing way to end your meal experience.

Closed Thursdays, and every 4th Wednesday.

Open from 11:00 – 14:00 for lunch, and 17:00 – 20:30 for dinner.

HOW to get there:

Get off at JR Fukushima station on the Loop Line, and turn left out of the station. Cross the train tracks, and make an immediate left at Mister Donuts down into the 'shoutengai'. Cross over Amaidaike suji street intersection, and keep walking a little more. Karani is on the right hand side corner.

After your meal, you could have some coffee, cake and slow time at either the newly opened 'Cafe Stove' (in the 'shotengai' heading back to ward the station on the left side), (10:00 - 18:00 on weekends and public holidays, and 10:00 - 20:00 on weekdays.)

The staff are sweet ("Here won't you have some roll cake we got as a gift. We surely can't eat it all." they said to me on my first visit), the crockery is adorably retro, the hand made donuts are scrummy, and the mood is slowly healing.

BETWEEN my HEAD and the SKY

I very rarely intentionally watch TV in Japan these days since Ainori on Mondays at 11:00pm. has finished forever. My J-boy likes TV of course. If I'm lucky, something interesting comes on whilst he is relaxing. Late last night I got a peeking in at an all-in-black Yoko Ono with signature black sunglasses, performing with her son Sean. In a mini interview afterwards, a lot was casually mentioned about John Lennon, and Sean's features certainly remind you deeply of his forever-famous Father.

I have always been fascinated by all John Lennon said and did, and feel particularly connected to his love of Japan. Although I haven't been, here's a link to the John Lennon Museum in Saitama Prefecture.

I've been wanting to go to Beyer Books all Summer; it was just one of those feelings you get. Like some strange knowing that something is going to be just right when it happens to happen. It was a deliberate happy celebration ritual for my very last weekday off for my Summer 2009 holidays before Semester Two begins on Monday. It was somehow the most perfect combination of all the ingredients that I needed. When I stepped in to Beyer Books yesterday, I knew I would most certainly become a regular. Perhaps you will too?

Looking about at the groovy, eclectic, and arty books, goods and postcards on the first floor, I paused when Mr. Kiyoshiro Imawano floated into my world in a song collaboration all sweet and serenade-y. It was one of those perfectly bittersweet Autumn moments, and ripples of 'torihada' (goosebumps) tingled my arms. His May second death this year at the tender age of 58, was up there in shock and sorrow for me alongside Michael Jackson's passing. His flamboyant and fabulous fashion fevers had always impressed me,

Waves of some unknown 'sabishii' mood which had been floating in and about me recently, was resurrected and set free slightly I noticed. The music here tells a story; it doesn't just set the mood. There is a gentle kindness in the air. There is a softness, a slowdown, and an open channel to naturally explore and locate another kind of you. I can be me and free in glee.

An individuality organic can be felt at Beyer; there is a special ease of rhythm, and a distinct lack of pretension in a 'sono mama' (as is) aura in the ego-less owners Mr. and Mrs. Umeda. There is a generosity in their movements, and a moment-to-moment recogniton pure of what 'now' really means. You are aware that they have something special; that they have seen things and experienced another life. It is like a private paradise of calm and curiosity.

Go barefoot upstairs to the Primary-school-green carpet in the Library area filled with books, soft angles, and healing tranquility electric. The placement of furniture and stools, the curve of the bookcase, the lighting, and the attention to detail and design, accentuate a striking simplicity that deepens your intuition. Come here with slow time on your mind; stay all day, find a book, create something, write a long postcard, begin your Christmas wish list. The hourly 'dong' of the 'tick' 'tock' clock, give you a clue of the time if you are deep in reverie.

The personally selected book collection is like taking a peek into somebody's soul somehow; it is rather an intimate thing if you notice how you react. Pick me, pick me say the book titles.

It could be happily emotional to find a book from your past, or quite overpowering if a book with answers wants to 'meet' you. My faraway London friend's 'ki ni iri' (special and sacred) book LIBRARIES by Candida Hofer, winked at me to shake my mini sabishii. “Ha! It joked. The world is small sista.”

How do you want to create your first 'deai' (meeting) with Beyer Books? It is important. Choose a time when you won't need to rush; perhaps after work on a weekday afternoon, or maybe around 3:00pm. on a weekday off? First impressions are powerful. First connections to a place are unforgettable.

I remember my first meeting with the Taj Mahal. I thought the bus I had caught was a direct route (what a beginner!), but realised when we had stopped for lunch, stopped to look at carpets, and stopped to look at the heavenly Red Fort (Absolutely stunning), that I needed to make a choice. The Taj Mahal with a various blend of local and international visitors in the blazing midday sun at peak time (not the best for photography either), or on terms I made. I left the group upon arrival, and checked in to an el-cheapo hotel nearby.

I 'met' the Taj the next morning, all moody and mysterious. The Indian man at the ticket booth lit his candle, smiled his sweetness, and let me, the first visitor for the day in. The guards up near this Living Beauty, offered to shine their torches on the beautifully glistening coloured tiles inside the roof without any demand of 'baksheesh' (friendly bribing with rupees). Timing is everything.

I can't quite fathom not having the choice of what health insurance I use as a foreigner in Japan. When my Father was in critical condition a few years ago, my private health insurance naturally paid for my flight home. As petrifying and emotionally draining as these circumstances can be, without the availability of a safety net of health insurance that caters to the foreigner in Japan, we are left with a social health system that ignores our most essential needs as expatriates.

YAYOI Kusama

MULTIPLYING room

There are so many things to love about her.

I almost screamed when I walked out of Central train station in Sydney after a long flight from Osaka late last December, and met Yayoi. There she was.

Of course if you already know my sometimes imaginary way of language expression, you might ask twice. Yayoi was plastered on the city bus stop in her pink fabulousness, advertising a FREE exhibition at the delightful Museum of Contemporary Art down near the Opera House and Circular Quay. A free exhibition of Yayoi Kusama. Free! It was certainly a "MERRY Christmas Janelle" moment.

Today walking home from Umeda, I stopped in at the Visitor's Centre just near JR Osaka station there to see what was happening.

AMAYU super SPA LAND

an AUTUMN equinox ALIGNMENT

I am often asked the million dollar question quite casually by all sorts of random people. It can come at me from many different angles, in many varying circumstances, and at moments when I don't have a definitive answer ready beyond metaphoric glitz. People don't seem to always recognize the sensitivity, depth and complete vulnerability that is needed to answer that question absolutely. Even more than the greeting-like, “How long have you been here then?”, that pinnacle question of, “So, why did you come to Japan?”, somehow doesn't fit clearly into any A B C formula of explanation for me. Even now. If people are satisfied with my fumbling handmade answer, they then might ask, “How has it changed you?”. What isn't asked of me, yet could be equally revealing in its clarity, would be to ask how my Japanese partner has changed because of me.

I would answer that I gave my beau his first ever experience staying at an expensive Ryokan (Japanese lodge), in the ideallic Kurokawa Onsen in Kumamoto for a birthday weekend.

I introduced Australian fishing style to him in my hometown (where he caught a mini hammerhead shark, and gigantic female flathead, that gets him 'fisherman cred' even now in conversations with the blokes out drinking in Osaka).

Lastly, I would say the most distinct turn about I have seen for our daily life, is the transformation of taking a bath (for him) into something completely joyous and desirable.

Having said this, my J-beau handed me two tickets to Amayu Spa the other day, from the 'master' at his favourite local bar. “Massan didn't want these. He knows how much we like baths. Let's go in Silver Week J”. Delighted I was indeed! We hadn't been to Amayu Spa for quite some time, so off we went for a morning soak today to celebrate 'Shuubun no Hi' (Autumn Equinox). The place hadn't changed at all, and I could feel a nostalgic giggle bursting from within as soon as I entered the front doors.

Amayu Spa is only a few minutes from JR Amagasaki station, and a short drive from Umeda.

Compared to other bath houses that I regularly visit, Amayu is indeed a very different bathing experience. Amayu Spa Land is open 24 hours a day, and the standard price is 1575 yen for adults, and 630 yen for children. It is considerably more expensive than Gokurakuyu Spa (SEE 'SUPER Sento Sensational' in WELLNESS), although just as great, but offers a few more facilities to justify the price.

The admission price covers many things. Upon entry to the bathing area, you receive a bag filled with a big towel, a small towel for the bath, a toothbrush (if you wish), and a choice of three outfits to wear after your bath; there are two Aloha-y ones, and a 'wafuu' (Japanese style) yukata. Shampoo and conditioner, plus body soap is provided within the bathing area, and you are also given a locker for the day. All this I guess is quite standard.

Upstairs though, there are a variety of rooms (gender segregated) where you can rest and read a book, take a long nap, or even for staying overnight. There are tatami mat rooms, day rooms, recliner chairs, blankets and plenty of peace and quiet. A cheap option for accommodation if you ever get stuck. For something more private, capsule rooms are also available for an additional price.

Downstairs there is a huge open shokudo-styled, izakaya-feel restaurant with various meals on offer, and extremely popular with the older set for the daily shows at 13:00 and 18:00. It is quite entertaining from the sideline to see the popular 'manzai men' comedians make everybody laugh hysterically loud, or the charismatic 'enka' singers making the ladies blush in their velvet bow ties, carnation, and white suit.

Once you pass through the 'noren' curtains to the bathing area, the quirky place behind you quickly transforms into a regular bath house. There are rows and rows and rows of lockers to cater for the bus loads of people, but if you get there early in the morning, you can almost have the place to yourself. If you would like an 'akasuri' Korean scrub down (2625 yen for 20 minutes), make sure you book because it is quite popular.

If you are still a bit shy, or just want some privacy, there is a private wash area at the back for 5 people (next to the glass doors to go outside) complete with softly playing enka music, 'ryokan' mooded view from your mirror, and a lovely old bath behind you to make the daydreaming more real.

The covered outdoor 'rotemburo' is outstanding in its outback Australia Uluru coloured bath water, and naturally stained pebble pathway. You can't see the bottom, so be careful; it is deceivingly deep. There are also three cute hot tubs (not so hot) outside with two 'momiji' maple trees and 'susuki' (pampas grass) in the landscape to soften your mood even more.

Last time I was here, a brazen lady in the sauna abruptly asked me out of nowhere in the most matter-of-fact voice, “How old are you?”. How witty can you be when you are wrapped only in a tiny towel? The 'iriguchi' (entry point) when Japanese ladies talk to me at the bath house, is usually either, “Hada ga kirei desu ne” (you have lovely skin), or “Sutairu ga ii neeee” (you have a nice figure). I often make up some modest answer that somehow flatters them in return. It must have worked today because the cackle and chitchat of feedback in return from the ladies in the salt steam room was medicinal.

Just as I was about to leave today, a tiny elderly lady sees me, pauses, then looks at me and says, “SU TE KI” (lovely), and then in the biggest lady voice she could muster, she says, “WONDERFUL!!!” and toddles off.

Is that a hidden message I wonder for the first ever Kobe Documentary Film Festival which is currently on for 3 more days; September 23, 26 and 27. Each day has four films showing, so perhaps something will grab your mood even though this post is quite late.

All the films are in Japanese (with no subtitles), but I am sure there are many of you who have POW-WOW blow-me-away Japanese, or those who themselves are into making documentary films, that the meaning will just soak in sweetly and deeply.

The funky title 'Biigan Bunka' (Vegan culture) caught my eye today as I read the latest Meets Regional magazine. The entire magazine this month is dedicated to the worship of vegetables.

Cycling around the city today on another sunny Sunday is simply bliss for me. Accompanied by my beau, I am sure not to get lost, sure to eat well, and sure to find new places wonderful. We ventured over to Kara Hori Dori shopping arcade because it is so welcoming in its simplicity.

To get to Kara Hori Dori shopping arcade and the 'arty areas', you can take the Nagahori Tsurumi Ryoukuchi Line to Matsuyamachi station. It is a 5 minute walk from Exit 3 to the hub of action.

BAGEL and BAGEL b & b

On a quick visit to Melbourne recently to meet two of my gutsiest Virgoan friends, I finally found my way to the deliciously humming Brunswick Street that was long, long overdue.

It was like being in New Delhi for the first time when all your senses are automatically turned on, and you almost forget to breathe because you have fallen in love instantaneously, immediately and intentionally. Or early morning walking with the mist on Charles Bridge in Prague, or on safari in the Serengeti and feeling completely like you have always meant to go there.

My old High school friend Lee, had texted my Dad's phone before I left NSW, claiming, “You gotta go 2 Brunswick St. Tram 112 from CBD. You'll love it JJ. You'll love it. C ya @ 5. ”

The absolute way good friends know me, get me, and direct me to places that possess all the greatest adjectives of mood, depth and mingled human spice is priceless. It is the people that make places come alive. It is the people of a place that draw me in with their smiles beautiful, fashion confidence original, personalities ablaze, and self awareness switched on with the most natural allure. It is the people, always the characters you randomly meet, who make those small talk comments that brighten your day exponentially.

Of course it is the same here in Japan. As much as I love the dynamic power of Tokyo, and the calm, centering undercurrents of Kyoto, Osaka has a unique recipe that resonates within me in all answerings of YES.

People watching spaces all about the city let you peek in to the right now of 'ryuukou' (What's 'in', what's hot, and what's happening), and if you tune your ears, you might nonchalantly pick up some newly fashioned Osaka-ben (dialect) unknown. Watch how people use body language to convey meaning, colours to express mood and creativity, and I-pods to perfect the inner city gait.

A lively, powerful and popular place in Umeda to watch the way of people is Bagel and Bagel. Flavour of the month bagel specials, and a complete menu page colourful can be found here (in Japanese).

There are the mini pop-in people for some quick energy, the foreigner stocking up on bagels for next day brunch, and the people like me who sit at the tall seats of the counter top that sweep across the whole front window and go slow, slowly. It can be a lovely way of modern meditation, or a zappy burst of wow-factor sparkle.

The simple white brick walled interior, reasonable bagel and drink sets, and constant changeover of customers is somehow refreshing. A great place to have tucked into your memory when you just need to pause a little in the go-go-go pace of Umeda central.

Japan is the land of 'gyoretsu' (lining up). It's not like at home where people line up to get into a favourite nightclub, for tickets to a sure-to-sell-out concert, or even for an end-of-year clearance sale at a big department store (think the Boxing Day Christmas sales of cards, wrapping paper and bon bons filled with those fabulous-for-fotos tissue paper hats, a joke, and a plastic toy).

Japanese people seem so used to the culture of lining up; we see it daily at the train station in the expected 'niretsu' (two lines) on the platform. Foreign friends who visit Osaka always take photos of the Japanese lined up in various locations of calm organization; something I have of course grown used to by now (and particularly grateful).

Restaurants of popularity always have seats outside for their waiting customers, and the establishments aware even the colder months won't keep people away, have heaters, blankets and ashtrays. The waiting seems to weave into the story of the event itself; the anticipation of amazing things to come. You can see the joy in people's faces when they get close to the head of the queue, and even the look of complete acceptance when they see couples and couples ahead of them.

Line ups in Japan seem to guarantee somehow that the place is worth it.

I wonder for what, and for how long you are all willing to wait?

I waited 30 minutes the other night at Hana Kujira because I just had to have some Oden despite the bad timing of when I went. Shin Sekai (New World) near Tsutenkaku Tower always has wonderful line ups at the most famous places for 'kushikatsu' on the weekend; it is expected, and people wait.

The 70 yen 'croquette' served at Nakamura-ya in Tenma are worth it. Wait if you have to.

Eaten immediately, or served later on fresh bread, they melt away in your mouth. The Japanese gourmet website Tabe-log is full of comments by everyday people who rate and write about their experiences at different places about town. My favourite comment for the Nakamura-ya korokke are 'amakute hoku hoku' (sweet and steamy hot), and the very desirable 'The Korokke King'.

Nakamura-ya is open 9:00 – 18:30 Monday through Saturday.

The croquette shop is just there all mini and unassuming on the right hand side; perhaps with a line up depending on the time of day. Naturally lunchtime is especially busy. Try to avoid THIS if you can.

Just the name of this yearly event gives me calm soothing. I missed the one last year, but somehow my deeply internal spiritual goddess hasn't forgotten she wants to go. Held at Ryosokuin in the Kyoto temple complex of Kenninji Temple in the Gion area, and heralded as the biggest YOGA event in Kansai, there are so many reasons to make a pilgrimage to Kyoto for the weekend of October 17 and 18. Doing sun salutations in an old Japanese temple in Kyoto is certainly something to feel doki doki (beating heart loud and powerful) and waku waku (internal glee bubbling) about. The flyer snapshots alone of the yoga teachers attending, give me feel-good tingles with their eyes of wisdom and chakra points aglow in complete alignment.

Classes vary in price, length, type and level so there will surely be something that feeds your physical and emotional needs. A combination of both international and Japanese teachers gives you variety in choice of language, and the four different locations for classes also adds to the excitement of the event.

With original class names like Gentle Slow Flow, Tibet Heart Yoga, Love Yoga, Vinyasa Wave Flow and Body Make Yoga, to the more traditional Hatha, Ashtanga and Sivananda Yoga classes.

There are also Ayurveda, Pranayama (breathing techniques), Chakra and Deep Theuruputic Restructuring workshops to name only a few of the class options available.

I have too often looked at published stories in favourite magazines or coffee table display-oriented photography collections and thought, "I could do that! Yeh, I could! Why don't I?". I have even had those thoughts that I could probably do it better as well. You know what I mean don't you?
